Governor George Ryan says he has reviewed the case of every death
row inmate in Illinois but still hasn't decided whether he's going
to grant clemency to any or all of them.
The governor has said he plans to act on the more than 140
clemency requests before his term ends. His last full day in office
is January 12th.
Ryan says today that he's also looked over the cases of roughly
20 inmates who didn't ask him for clemency.
But he told reporters in Chicago today that he still doesn't
think he'll grant a blanket clemency to all inmates, even though he
hasn't ruled that option out.
Ryan also says he hasn't had a chance to read a letter from more
than 400 law professors. The letter says executive clemency should
be and has been used to correct systemic injustice.
