Outgoing
Illinois governor to pardon four death row
inmates
Chicago-AP -- Outgoing Illinois Governor
George Ryan plans to pardon four death row
inmates in the first of two highly anticipated
speeches on the subject. Friday's
announcement will cap Ryan's three-year campaign
to highlight flaws in the state's capital
punishment system.
A source close to the clemency process
says Ryan plans to pardon four men who allege
that Chicago police tortured them into making
confessions.
The source says Ryan is still considering
the fate of other death row inmates and will
announce his decisions on Saturday.
His speech Saturday afternoon at
Northwestern University law school has even more
symbolism. The law school has led the attack on
the state's capital punishment system.
While Ryan has said he's not inclined to
grant a blanket clemency, Northwestern
professors and lawyers say they don't believe
they'll be disappointed.
