Illinois Governor George Ryan
could soon be a nominee for one of the world's
most prestigious awards.
An Illinois State University law
professor is working to nominate Ryan for the
Nobel Peace Prize. The professor says Governor
Ryan's work for death penalty reform is the
basis for his candidacy.
News of the prospective
nomination has a lot of people talking in
Southern Illinois, especially with the licenses
for bribes scandal surrounding the governor.
The ISU professor also points
out Europeans are against the death penalty, and
the Swedish panel of judges often selects a
winner to make a political statement.
Last year's Peace Prize winner
was former U-S present Jimmy Carter.
