Clemency Question Coming To A Head Posted January 2, 2003 4:24pm With less than two weeks left in his term as governor,
time is running out for George Ryan to make a decision regarding
clemency for almost 160 death row inmates.
Some hail Ryan as
a hero for halting Illinois executions. University of Illinois law
professor Francis Boyle is filling out the paperwork to nominate the
governor for the Nobel Peace prize. Boyle says Ryan's work to reform
the state's death penalty deserves the nomination. Ryan put a
moratorium on executions after more than a dozen death row inmates
were exonerated.
Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons
has gone on the record opposing what the governor has done calling
Ryan an ''opportunist''. Lyons says it is not right to wait until
his last few days in office to make this decision. Peoria County
currently has two men on death row.
