There
are many Canadian abolitionist activists working on projects
to end the death penalty in the United States, however to my knowledge
there is no abolition group dedicated to working on
projects in Canada. You may well reply “but there is
no death penalty in Canada, so what would we do?” Here
is a partial list of activities that I can think of, and
I’m sure there are many more.
- There
is an idea currently being developed for an
International Abolition Day. This would be marked by
marches and demonstrations in major cities around
the world. We could organize the observance of this
day in Canada.
- We should call on our government to follow the lead of Mexico and the
European Union by pressuring the US to honour its international treaty
obligations, particularly those protecting the rights of foreign
nationals and juveniles facing the death penalty..
- We
should be canvassing and fighting the Canadian
Alliance party’s open and declared support for the
return to Capital Punishment in Canada.
- We
need to compile a list of all organizations, groups,
VIPs and others to whom we could look for support
and endorsement of our cause.
- We
need to compile or build a Canadian Media contact
list that can be used whenever we need to send out
press releases or other information.
If
you would like to become part of this Canadian initiative,
please join our mailing list where discussions will take place and news items shared.
