the Abolitionist Action Committee's
10th Annual Fast and Vigil
to Abolish the Death Penalty at the
U.S. Supreme Court in Washington D.C.
June 29 to July 2, 2003.
The Canadian Abolition Project will hold its first public awareness
day on July 02, 2003 in Toronto, on University Avenue, opposite the U.S.
Consulate. We support the growing Abolition movement in the United
States and the many abolition activists who will gather in Washington to
hold the 10th Annual Fast & Vigil in front of the U.S. Supreme Court
Building. Our presence will mark the 27th anniversary of abolition in
Canada. Something as Canadians we can celebrate.
By contrast, that same year -- 1976 -- marks the U.S. Supreme Court
decision (Gregg v. Georgia) that reinstated the Death Penalty south of
the border. Since that fateful day 858 people have been executed in the
United States either by lethal injection, hanging, firing squad, gas
chamber or electrocution.
For more information on the U.S. Fast & Vigil go to: http://www.abolition.org/annual.html
The Canadian Abolition Project was founded to campaign in support of
Canadian government policies that will ensure consistency with Canada's
position as a completely abolitionist nation. We encourage and support
interventions by the Canadian government in defence of Canadians facing
the death penalty abroad. We are dedicated to achieving abolition of the
death penalty for all, in all countries of the World and particularly in
the United States of America.
We invite all interested Canadians to visit our rally on July 2
between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to learn more about us and lend support to
our project.
